Becoming Future Girl Corp
Yesterday one half of the Subject attended the inaugural session of Future Girl Corp, brainchild of the multi-talented WAH nails founder, Sharmadean Reid. Applicants had to submit a one-page business plan and a lucky 100 were chosen to take part.
Billed as a 12 hour business marathon workshop it was certainly that! The day was divided around 4 core elements that any future CEO needs to know: VISION distilling your business into a single mission statement, USER PROFILES defining who your 5 key customers are, BUSINESS MODEL completing a business model canvas and ROADMAP a 5-step roadmap of key milestones.
The day began at 9am sharp with 100 budding business leaders gathered in co-working space Huckletree. Breakfast and nectar of the gods (that’s coffee to you and me) was generously provided to fuel our brains, ears and writing hands for all the information we were about to take on board.
Sharma opened with a speech about her motivation for creating FGC. “I started WAH by accident, had to learn on the fly and made tonnes of mistakes along the way. I am passionate about economic empowerment for women and FutureGirlCorp is my way of helping the next generation of female business entrepreneurs get off to the best possible start by providing them with the skills and advice to ensure they don’t make the same mistakes I did. Nearly all our speakers are millennial women who have gone on to be successful in business and I want to show the next generation that they can go out and succeed!”
Another interesting motivation that inspired her was reading about Harvard business students who are divided into Sections for their collegiate career. Bonds are built that last decades and when these graduates climb the ranks of whichever industry they enter, they can rely on their powerful network to help them succeed. FGC was to be our Section and I was super grateful to be #33 of the first 100!
Throughout the day, 20 female entrepreneurs, consultants and creators spoke and answered questions about their own career paths and the 4 core elements Vision, User profiles, Business model and Roadmap. After talks on a specific ‘module’ each group (the 100 girls were divided into 4 groups) retreated to a classroom space to put pen to paper. At times this was challenging but each seminar had a leader and advisors.
The vibe of the day was uber collaborative, generous and structured to give us the absolute maximum knowledge possible. Like an MBA in a day!
